Things to Consider When Designing a Space for Seniors

In today's blog, we are discussing how to design/decorate a space for seniors while keeping safety at the forefront. Here are some things to keep in mind as you go about this:

1. Accessibility 

Consider getting pieces that sit higher up, especially when it comes to couches and chairs. This is to avoid any discomfort caused by mobility issues.

2. Good lighting

Make sure to disperse light fixtures and lamps throughout the space, ensuring that no area is too dark. It is important that the entirety of the home is well-lit to avoid any accidents due to lack of visibility.

3. Accessible storage

In our previous blog, we discussed ways to make the most out of your space, many of those being different types of storage. When installing storage for seniors, make certain it is easy to reach and utilize. Consider implementing drawers instead of cabinets, positioning floating shelves at a lower height, and using handles for drawers and doors rather than a knob.

4. Bathroom additions

Here are some bathroom additions that prioritize safety:

- Non-slip shower mats

- A grab bar in the shower

- A walk in shower versus a platform one has to step over to enter

5. Personalization

Although it is critical to keep safety as the main priority in a living space for seniors, this can lead to personal touches and details getting overlooked. This space should still feel like home, so be sure to include pops of color, personal photos, and decor pieces all throughout.
